Why you should post on your LinkedIn profile before the company page

If you manage your company's LinkedIn content, you might be missing a simple yet effective strategy. It's quick to implement, free, and could boost your reach and engagement. Post on your personal LinkedIn profile before your company page.

Contrary to popular belief, LinkedIn's algorithm and user behaviour prioritise content from personal profiles over company pages. Sharing business-related content as yourself is more likely to appear in more places on the platform, increasing engagement and spreading further.

Company pages, by contrast, tend to have much lower organic reach in most cases, between 2 - 5%. They're valuable for building brand credibility, but the reality is that their content often performs poorly unless boosted by ads or interaction from personal profiles. So when you post something important on your company page first, you're likely limiting how many people will actually see it.

What happens when you and your team share company content from your own profiles? You're turning each individual into a brand advocate, and that can be incredibly powerful. Not only does your message get amplified, but it also comes across as more authentic.

People trust people and their choices, not logos. If your colleagues or leadership team are also active on LinkedIn, encourage them to share the same content with their own spin by 'quoting' in your own post. This will add even more credibility. You can, of course, simply reshare your post, which will help to get it to a bigger audience instantly. Even better, if you're in a larger team, you can build a simple system or content calendar to coordinate who posts what and when. This will allow for a more structured and targeted plan so everyone isn't posting at the same time, which will give longevity to the content.

Here's how to put this strategy into action.

First, create content like a thought leadership post, video, blog article, or company update. Then, post it on your personal LinkedIn profile. Write in your own voice and add a personal insight to make it relatable. Encourage team members to engage by liking, commenting, and sharing. Wait a few hours (usually four to six) for organic momentum. Then, post the same content or a slightly adapted version on the company page. It is as simple as that.

This strategy offers real benefits to both the business and the individual.

  • Because LinkedIn prioritises personal posts more frequently than company ones, you're naturally boosting the chances that more people will see and engage with your content.

  • By posting as yourself, you're developing your own personal brand on LinkedIn, showcasing your expertise, building credibility, and becoming a voice people trust in your industry.

  • Even though the post is coming from a personal account, the message, product, or content still reflects back to the company. In most cases, you'll drive more traffic and greater brand awareness than if you'd just posted to the company page.

  • When multiple team members share a piece of content, it creates more touchpoints, helps your brand appear in more feeds, and reflects a united company culture.

Some marketers and company leaders might worry about blurring the line between personal and professional content. There is an argument that businesses will want to keep brand consistency in everything they put out. That is totally understandable; what we are suggesting is to enable wider reach, not diluting the initial content.

Others might have concerns about staff building their own personal brands off the back of sharing business content. You can't really think like that. Empowered employees are more loyal and more invested in what you are trying to achieve; give them a chance instead of holding them back.

If you want to beat LinkedIn's algorithm and get more from your content efforts, the solution isn't always to post more often or use paid ads. Sometimes, the smartest move is simply to use the platform the way it was designed to be used. By posting on your personal profile first and treating your team as an extension of your brand presence, you can dramatically boost your reach and drive real exposure for your business. It's a simple shift in the way you use LinkedIn on a daily basis that could really gain results for you and your company.
