The Apple World Wide Developer Conference 2025
Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 is just around the corner and the rumour mill is already in full flow. The tech community are always looking for the defining story as the excitement begins to build ahead of the start of the event on June 9th.
What has this year got in store and will it feature the on going situation with Apple Intelligence?
Every year the conference is dedicated to developers and the main focus is the Apple operating systems. This year is going to be particularly interesting because of the on going saga of Apple Intelligence and the missed promises of releases and enhancements that Apple started to tease over the past year or so. In the grand scheme of things will this really affect Apple and its stella reputation within its user base or is it just something that will blow over when they fully integrate more AI features into the hardware and software?
Apple has always been forward thinking and takes innovation very seriously but at their own pace. Many of the other big tech companies are sometimes first to market with new features and technologies. Sometimes it works other times they just fizzle away not to be seen again. Apple prefers to see what the landscape is like and adapt their own versions of tech that fix the same problems in their own way. Every year their WWDC event helps to introduce new software. They sometimes release or pre-release details of hardware that is quite infrequent though.
Apple's ecosystem is one of the most respected in the world allowing users to connect all their devices and services seamlessly. With iOS 19 being announced this year along with updates across the board it will be interesting to see how much information Apple with divulge.
iPhone sales continue to contribute to around 50% of total Apple sales so they are still the dominate product. This makes iOS a big priority every year and needs to hit the spot every time.
There has been a lot of hype around the release coming up to the conference this year with rumoured improvements across the Apple ecosystem. Some of them are a refined user interface, deeper AI integration with Apple Intelligence and improved efficiency that will enhance the experience of both new and existing devices.
Some of the more credible predictions include enhancements to widgets and more software customisation helping with layout and functionality. More advanced multi-tasking capabilities for the iPad making it even more efficient and productive. Privacy is one of Apple's continued areas of focus so they will add to the already solid features in that department.
There will of course be many headline features that won't be known until the actual event which always keeps the tension and excitement running right up to the event. There will be some skepticism this year from users and the press because of the on going Apple Intelligence situation. There has been a swell of frustration especially the way Apple has handled it all. They never really used to announce new features of products before they were ready. This helped to keep you guessing for what might be next so when a new product or in some instances a new category dropped into the wild it was a great piece of marketing and source for positive PR.

How did Apple get the recent Apple Intelligence and AI situation so wrong?
Well many think that Apple have been under pressure a little to release AI features because they have become quite behind. Integrating AI into devices to enhance the users experience had to be a big priority especially with Google and their Pixel phone being well ahead in most areas. They must of been feeling the heat, for the first time, so did the marketing department at Apple start hyping up features before they were actually ready?
This would have indirectly put pressure on the engineering department to deliver on a deadline which they subsequently missed. In a situation like this something evidently went wrong was that due to communication between the departments or something else. That I feel we will never know.
The competition from companies like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft have been well ahead for a while now. Apple have famously found themselves in this situation many times having to play catch up. Did their mindset change though with the whole AI race and why should it be so important to them?
When they finally announced their AI roadmap users expected revolutionary features to rival the competition. When those features didn't arrive and they missed their deadlines users were not very happy. Along with the users there were many prominent journalists like John Gruber who was very vocal and disappointed with the way the whole situation was handled. From the outside looking in this so called pressure to be releasing AI features is very important. This is because Apple is always looking to sell more hardware and Apple Intelligence was their next big feature to facilitate that.
Apple has traditionally been known for keeping its projects under wraps until they are fully ready this helps with managing user expectations. In recent years this has been fading because they have been trickling information out about a number of products and services well before they are released. With the recent gold rush for AI technologies many think that Apple broke the rule by teasing features that weren't fully developed. The big question is will Apple now retract to the secretive way of doing things like they have in the past?
As WWDC 2025 approaches what is Apple going to do and how are they going to tackle the challenge they have in front of them?
Do they stay silent and focus on the positive stuff like the releases of the operating systems or do they face the elephant in the room?
Only time will tell of course I think they will still continue to push the whole Apple Intelligence feature set and how it integrates into the ecosystem because that will help to sell more hardware. They will highlight more benefits of future integrations they might even own up to why they have been so slow in the implementation. Whilst they develop their own in house systems we should also see more third party AI tools allowed to work 'inside' Apple devices like Open AI or similar. This will show intent and appease the user base for the time being. In the grand scheme of things I really don't think the current frustrations will affect Apple and sales of their products or services. Although they have hit a bump in the road they have such a strong brand it will likely start to fade away as new tech and features are introduced.
The AI gold rush is on and everyone wants a piece of the pie. Apple will be more concerned about hardware sales but the integration of AI technologies will make their products continue to be very appealing to their existing and potential new customers. The future is still positive for Apple for many years to come…I hope.
